It must be the time of year when they go on the rampage! They have been popping up all around the out sides of the field and it is 5 acres.
I have knocked a few tops in but they are back up again the next day.
I am going to have to move the electric fencing away from the mole hills. The horses like to take off and have a chase around the field every day at full speed and I would die if they hurt themselves by tripping from a mole hill. I have been told that you can use poison or traps to kill them. I couldn't or wouldn't ever do that. They have every right to be there. I have searched on the net and found a device called, Mole repeller solar. It is a stick that you put into the ground and it is charged up in the day light. Like the lights that are powered by the sun and work at night.
The way it works is the stick emits a deep vibrating sound, this is a frequency us humans can't hear and through the sound it give off drives the moles away.
This link takes you to the product. By the looks of it I will need quite a few! I will have to measure the parts of the field and see how many I will need. I have also been told I could use ferret poop! Once I have that I should ferment it in a bucket of water and get it into a thick
mixture and then to pour it down the burrows and this will drive them away. Not sure where I would get the ferret poop from though.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could all live in harmony! I wish we could but I know I cannot have them around the horses. if the above does not work then I will have to work around them with the electric fencing.
The mole builds the tunnels looking for earthworms and other small invertebrates that are found in the soil. They also like a variety of nuts. The worms fall into the tunnels and the moles then runs very quickly to kill and eat the worm. The moles saliva contains a toxin that paralyze earthworms. If there is more then one, then the mole will store away the the living pray for later. It as been discovered by researches, thousands of earthworm in one moles larder. I found it amazing. It's suprising what we learn every day about nature. It really is beautiful.
